Fashion & Clothing

The habit of changing clothing frequently and occurred to what is 'in' is a very western habit. However, there are signs that it was first introduced into Europe during the 8th Century by a man from Baghdad called Ziryab, who was a musician and stylist. He introduced the idea of wearing dark coloured clothing made from materials such as wool during the colder winter months, and then bright, light colours made from silk and cotton during the summer months when it was warmer. The dyes for these clothes were made in various tanneries and dye works.

Western fashion in clothing is fairly accurately seen as having started during the mid 14th century. The most drastic change at this time was with clothing worn by men. This become much tighter and shorter - the bottom half frequently only just covering the buttock area. The men at this time also often padded out their chest area to appear bigger. This led to the general fashion for a tailored top half and a looser trousers on the bottom which is still followed today.

The 15th century saw a huge change in the development of fashion and the trend of accessorizing hair and changing the style it was worn in really took off. On the whole fashion was something that was followed by the richer classes in society but gradually even peasants were emulating what they saw on these people - not always to their liking!

Coming up to the current time and fashion is an ever changing thing. For some people, this is negative and encourages the constant need to 'consume' that we see so much in western cultures. For other people, they see the fact that there is so much change as a good thing, so that they can experience new trends. However, what is frequently seen in fashion is really more of a cyclic pattern. In that items of clothing will often go in and then out of fashion periodically. Nowadays, celebrities and well known fashion houses have a lot of influence of over what is seen as 'in fashion' and this is true of the general media, including women's magazines as well.

Fashion Designs also a massive industry online, with thousands of websites available with fasion tips, info and also of course, for buying clothing items. Websites such as theitguide.co.uk, vam.ac.uk and hoyfashion.co.uk are all fashion related

Fashion journalism is a key factor in determining the current trends and much is written in magazines, newspapers and online about this. Vogue started in 1902 in the US and is the longest running and most successful of all fashion magazines.
